Debutant Davies strike seals 3-0 win for Heys in Isle of Man

Updated: Sep 21, 2022

A 90th minute strike by striker Matthew Davies completed a 3-0 win for Prestwich Heys against the Isle of Man at the bowl on Saturday.

Heys first ever game on the Island came off the back of two previous defeats against AFC Liverpool and Kendal Town and managers Lee O'Brien and James Hampson looking for an improvment included two debutants midfielder Bevan Burey on loan from Glossop North End and the above Matthew Davies signed from Euxton Villa. Prestwich were first to show in the sixth minute with defender Darcy O'Connor firing over the bar after good work by Kai Haigh and just after Burey skimmed the cross bar from eighteen yards. Back came the Isle of Man on twenty-nine minutes with Stephen Whitley firing over the bar and on thirty-four minutes Chris Brass saw his shot deflected for a corner. In the closing stages of a first half that had so far seen both teams trying to get on top of the midfield, Heys stepped it up a gear with the inventive Haigh setting up Davies from eighteen yards on forty-two minutes but his shot was high over the bar and on the stroke of half time the ball came in from the left but Dylan Fitzgerald could not force it over the line.

Heys finished the half stronger but with neither keeper tested it was 0-0 at the break and the game needed a bit of extra quality and on fifty-two minutes that's exactly what happened as winger Fitzgerald put the visitors 1-0 as he got the ball on the left and smashed a shot eighteen yards out which flew into the top right hand corner of the net past IOM keeper Dean Kearns to the delight of the travelling support. Prestwich pressed hard and were rewarded again four minutes when a corner on the right found Kai Haigh twelve yards out who blasted a shot bottom right past Kearns to put them in the box seat. Heys now in full control of the midfield never looked back as the home side struggled to get any posession continued to get forward with Davies firing over and on seventy-five minutes Fitzgerald again bringing a save out of Kearns. The Isle of Man tried to make an impression firing over on eighty-five minutes and Heys final goal in the 90th minute came from an attack from the home side when the ball broke to new boy Davies who had a lot of work to do when he picked the ball on the right and slid it confidently past the advancing Kearns to make it 3-0 and give the visitors the points. So, a confident second half display from Heys in what was a big win because with the next four games all at home they have a chance to get points to push them up the table into a comfortable position and on this display that looks a distinct possibility.
