Heys concede late goal in defeat at Winsford United

A goal ten minutes from time from substitute David Short was enough to give struggling Winsford United a 2-1 victory over in form Prestwich Heys at the Barton Stadium on Saturday.

Goal scorer Dylan Fitzgerald above Heys came into this one on the back of three wins in a row and were in confident mood after Wednesday’s 2-1 win at Padiham and joint managers Lee O’Brien and James Hampson brought back Regan Brown into the starting line up at centre half after the departure of Rudy Misambo who left to Join Lancaster City in the week, Brad Sixsmith also came into the midfield replacing Darcy O’Connor Heys were quickly out of the blocks in the second minute with captain Arron Chalmers heading over the bar and were ahead soon after in the seventh minute when great work by Max Bardsley-Rowe down the right found Dylan Fitzgerald who continued his recent scoring run by hammering home from eight yards past Winsford keeper Aaran Lyons to put the visitors one up. It was very nearly two straight after when a goalmouth scramble saw Lyons clinging on to the ball just preventing it from going over the line. Back came the home side on twelve minutes though with Heys keeper Jordan Hadlow blocking a shot from six yards out. Omar Mbowe had a great chance for Heys on fifteen minutes as the ball looped into the box, but his shot was dragged wide from six yards. Winsford were starting to push higher up the field, getting the better of proceedings and were rewarded on the half hour as Prestwich fail to clear and Daniel Boden shot past Hadlow from eight yards although Heys had a very good case for a handball in the build-up that wasn’t given. Winsford continued to press, and it was United winger Gabriel Mooney-Munoz who was dangerous all afternoon who brought a great save from Hadlow on thirty-five minutes with the follow up just going wide. It was Mooney Munoz again just before the break heading over from a corner and the half time whistle couldn’t come soon enough for Heys who after a bright start were now on the back foot. It was the visitors starting brightly after the break in a key five minutes for Heys where two good chances went begging, firstly Mbowe firing wide and shortly after Matt Davies cut inside twelve yards out and brought a save from Aaran Lyons. Back came Winsford though getting the better of midfield but without any major chances, the game at this point could have gone either way, and it was Fitzgerald for Heys on sixty-five minutes who was through on goal, but Lyons advanced out quickly and the shot went over the bar. Heys back four were alert on Seventy-five minutes clearing a goalward bound header, back came Heys shortly after with a corner from Nathan Emery on the right finding Chalmers whose shot was cleared off the line and the game was heading towards a frantic finish and indeed it was Winsford who grabbed the winner two minutes from time as David Short dispossessed Heys in the middle and ran down the right and launched an impressive shot past Hadlow from twelve yards . Further disruption for Prestwich came in injury time when winger Max Bardsley-Rowe appeared to raise a hand after a bad challenge and the last job of the afternoon was to raise a straight red card for his actions. So, a disappointing afternoon for Heys who deserved a point and had chances to win, but this loss means they have lost to four of the teams in the bottom six of the table this season and one wonders where they would be in the table if these had been prevented.
